Grange is home to a number of notable golfers, in addition to
Paul McGinley. David Sheahan is one of Ireland's finest amateur golfers (Walker Cup and Irish International honours) and the first Irish amateur to win a professional tournament (Jeyes Professional Tournament at Royal Dublin in 1962).
David is featured in the book "Legends in the Spare Time" and it is worthy of mention that in May 2008 at a function in the Club to mark the achievements of those Legends, it was noted that on that very day David had "shot his age" - needless to say a sub-70 round! Other great amateur legends Noel Fogerty and Arthur Pierce were amongst the attendance at the function. Two of Arthur's nephews, Jack and Robbie are in the rising crop of juvenile golfers rapidly approaching scratch status.
Other members who honed their skills on the fairways of Grange, achieving many amateur honours and who later went onto become professional golfers are brothers Leslie and David Walker, Brian Shaw and Hazel Kavanagh, who currently plays on the Ladies European Tour.
Female members include amateur internationals and scratch golfers Sheena McElroy (née O'Brien Kenny), Mary Gorry and the late Therese O'Reilly, whose exploits on the golfing circuit leave one in awe. Masie Mooney, a local girl, achieved a fantastic run winning the Irish, Dutch and Australian amateur opens in the same year. She emigrated and became chief executive of Women's Golf, Australia.
Youth Golf thirves at Grange thanks to the dedication of members over the years and the contrubutions of our professionals Watty Sullivan (Eamon Darcy was assitant to Watty for three years in the mid-60's at Grange, and went on to play in four Ryder Cups) and more recently Declan Leigh. A number of fine amateurs have also come through the ranks and won major amateur titles, including Mark Ryan (West of Ireland Champion 2003) and Michael McGinley Jnr. (Paul's younger brother), who won the North of Ireland title in 1996.
The popular Dublin Boys Trophy continues to be hotly contested at Grange each year by the stars of the next generation.
Grange has hosted many tournaments, uniquely both the Irish Amateur and Irish Professional Championships, and has tested many world leading professionals, Bobby Locke, Christy O'Connor Jnr. (holder of the professional course record), Bernhard Langer, Manuel Pinero, Tony Jacklin, Christy O'Connor Snr., and Rodger Davis to name but a few.
